Summary/Objective

The Controls Engineer is responsible for the safe, reliable and efficient operation of STACK’s Building Management Systems (BMS), Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS) and Chiller Plant Control System (CPOS/CCCS), including associated controls networks, integrations and data models. Working cross-functionally with Critical Operations, Engineering, Projects and Vendors, the role delivers hands-on technical expertise across configuration, optimisation, troubleshooting, maintenance and lifecycle management.

This position directly supports STACK’s commitment to 100% uptime and a concierge-level customer service experience, ensuring controls platforms provide accurate monitoring, reliable automation and actionable insights that reduce operational risk and improve performance.

Essential Functions

Operations

  • Support the safe day-to-day operation of all BMS/EPMS/CPOS/CCCS systems across facilities.

  • Ensure accurate monitoring of critical environments and promptly address system alarms, faults and irregularities.

  • Perform BMS/EPMS configuration changes, logic reviews, and control tuning under authorised change control.

  • Collaborate with the Critical Operations Team to ensure reliability and operational readiness of monitoring and control systems.

  • Assist with system restarts, firmware updates, patches, and scheduled maintenance activities.

  • Conduct system health checks, trend analysis, point-to-point verifications, and control loop validation.

  • Provide after-hours support when required.

  • Assist in developing and maintaining standardised BMS/EPMS architectures, templates, database structures, and documentation.

  • Support commissioning, integration, FAT/SAT activities and BMS/EPMS/CPOS/CCCS vendor deliverables for new builds and retrofit projects.

  • Work with internal teams and technology partners to introduce automation, dashboards, and reports to reduce operational risk.

  • Identify control optimisation opportunities and support roadmaps for energy efficiency improvements.

  • Support the integration of BMS/EPMS data into broader technology platforms for enhanced visibility.

  • Support vendor performance oversight, ensuring maintenance activities are completed to STACK standards.

  • May participate in vendor qualification, scope reviews, procurement, and technical evaluations.

  • Review vendor reports, close-out documents, and proposed changes to controls strategy or system architecture.

  • Always demonstrate STACK’s concierge-level customer service when interacting with clients and stakeholders.

  • Act as a technical escalation point for controls-related issues impacting operations.

  • Assist incident investigations and contribute to root-cause analyses and corrective actions.

People

  • Stakeholders at all levels of the STACK team.

  • All members of the Critical Operation teams; and

Competencies

  • Hands-on experience with Tridium Niagara, HVAC controls, BMS networking and integration.

  • Ability to interrogate and integrate devices using protocols such as Modbus and BACnet.

  • Understanding of data centre efficiency metrics such as PUE.

  • Ability to analyse complex technical information, system logs, and trend data.

  • Strong planning, prioritisation and organisational skills.

  • Risk-aware with the ability to escalate issues appropriately.

  • Capable of working collaboratively across multidisciplinary engineering and operational teams.

Work Environment/Conditions

  • This is a Monday - Friday position with on-call requirements to support after-hours incidents and escalations.

  • Work occurs across data halls, plant rooms, electrical/mechanical spaces and external plant areas; PPE required under site policy.

  • Participation in emergency response, readiness exercises and incident management activities is required.

Travel Required

  • Minimal travel expected; occasional travel between local STACK facilities may be required based on operational needs.

Required Education and Experience

  • 3+ years in BMS/EPMS engineering or controls-related roles within data centres or other mission-critical environments (e.g., pharma, airports, hospitals, fuel).

  • Practical experience executing controls changes in live environments under formal change control, with documented risk assessments and rollback plans.

  • Demonstrated capability to perform point-to-point, loop tuning, commissioning support, alarm rationalisation and trend analysis that informs operational decisions.

  • Proven experience with protocols such as BACnet and Modbus (discovery, addressing, object/point mapping, data quality and polling strategies).

  • Working knowledge of HVAC plant and electrical metering as they relate to controls (e.g., chillers, CRAH/CRAC, pumps/VFDs, cooling towers, CDU/row/door cooler control, UPS/meters/breakers).

  • Competency with Niagara-based tools (e.g., BQL queries, graphics, dashboards, schedules), or equivalent vendor platforms.

  • Familiarity with CMMS and monitoring platforms; able to align alarm priorities, maintenance tasks and documentation.

  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams) and diagramming tools for architecture and sequence documentation.

  • Clear, structured written and verbal communication skills suitable for customer briefings and PIR/RCA contributions.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics or Controls Engineering, or equivalent industry experience.

  • Experience developing Niagara dashboards, BQL queries or custom logic modules.

  • Experience with database structures used by controls platforms (e.g., SQL variants) and data archiving best practice.

  • Exposure to energy and water efficiency analytics (e.g., PUE/WUE dashboards, optimisation playbooks).

  • Participation in after-hours support for controls incidents.

Additional Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be willing to work outside normal business hours, including weekends, late nights, holidays, and on-call support.

  • Must be comfortable working in a high stress, fast paced environment with shifting priorities.

  • Participation in after-hours will be required.

Work Authorization/Security Clearance Requirements

  • Legal entitlement to work in Malaysia.

  • Ability to satisfy pre-employment screening requirements (as applicable), including right-to-work checks, background checks and reference checks.

  • Ability to meet data centre security requirements including badging, access control and adherence to customer-mandated security protocols.

  • Security clearance is not required unless specified for a customer-specific facility.
