About the Job

Reporting to the Manager, Business Intelligence, this position sits at the intersection of data engineering, analytics, and applied AI, building data infrastructure, intelligent workflows, and automated systems across OpenTable. The role collaborates cross-functionally with strategy, sales, and operations teams to identify operational friction points and deliver scalable solutions - ranging from analytics dashboards and ETL pipelines to production-ready AI tools, RAG pipelines, and automated action triggers.

The Business Intelligence Engineer is expected to deeply understand OpenTable's systems and data architecture, combining strong business acumen with technical execution. This position requires an analytical mindset, proactive problem-solving, and the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical business partners while delivering results in ambiguous environments.

This is a hybrid role; working from our office in Toronto twice a week.

Responsibilities

• Business-First Problem Discovery: Partner with cross-functional stakeholders (sales, strategy, operations) to analyze workflows, identify recurring manual bottlenecks, and define requirements for data models, automated pipelines, and AI-driven solutions.
• Data & AI Infrastructure Development: Design, build, and maintain scalable ETL/ELT pipelines, data models, and custom automations using Python and SQL to extract, transform, and load data into Snowflake.
• AI & Workflow Automation: Build and integrate applied AI components - including LLM API integrations (OpenAI/Anthropic), retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) tools, vector databases, and agentic workflows - to automate business operations and accelerate decision-making.
• Dashboards & Intelligent Insights: Create and manage interactive dashboards and visualizations (Superset, Preset) integrated with automated alert triggers and intelligent insight generation for key business metrics.
• Testing, Quality Control & Security: Implement validation, evaluation, and monitoring frameworks to ensure the accuracy, reliability, security, and compliance of both traditional data pipelines and AI model outputs.
• Tool Evaluation & Modernization: Continually evaluate emerging data orchestration tools (e.g., Airflow), AI frameworks (LangChain, LlamaIndex), and modern data sources to enhance overall analytics team capabilities.
• Stakeholder Communication: Clearly articulate technical architecture, pipeline logic, and AI-driven outcomes to non-technical business partners and leadership.

Minimum Qualifications

• Education & Experience: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Data Science, Information Systems, Economics, or a related quantitative field, with 2+ years of hands-on experience in data engineering, business intelligence, or applied analytics.
• Core Technical Stack: Advanced proficiency in SQL and Python for data processing, system integration, API development, and data modeling.
• Cloud & Data Architecture: Hands-on experience with cloud data warehouses (Snowflake) and data orchestration frameworks (e.g., Airflow or similar ETL tools).
• Applied AI & Automation Skills: Familiarity with modern AI APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic), vector databases, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) architectures, and orchestration frameworks (LangChain, LlamaIndex).
• Data Visualization: Proven experience designing enterprise dashboards and reports using tools such as Superset, MicroStrategy, Tableau, or similar BI tools.
• Business Acumen & Soft Skills: Proactive, curious, and adaptable mindset with excellent written and verbal communication skills; comfortable taking ownership of projects end-to-end in high-ambiguity environments.
