Teaching Assistant, Academy of Math and Programming (AMP)

About the Position

We are looking for enthusiastic Teaching Assistants with strong backgrounds in mathematics, computer science, or a related quantitative field for our Academy of Math and Programming (AMP) in New York City.

This is a temporary, six-week summer role, including one week of training before the five-week student program. AMP is a residential program serving recent high school graduates of diverse backgrounds who have experienced barriers to access and opportunity within advanced STEM education.

Students study mathematics, computer programming, data analysis, and game theory through challenging and interactive classes, problem-solving sessions, and games. You will work alongside instructors and other teaching assistants to support students in the classroom and help supervise the residential program.

Teaching Assistants support both the mathematics and computer science curricula. We do not expect everyone to have equal depth across every topic. It’s fine if you have greater experience in one subject, as long as you are excited to support both subjects and learn alongside the instructional team.

Additional responsibilities will include:

• Helping instructors deliver lessons in areas such as combinatorics, number theory, algorithms, programming, and software development
• Working with students individually and in small groups during classes, problem-solving sessions, and study hours
• Supporting classroom supervision, assignment review, and other academic coordination
• Teaching, guiding, and playing strategy games with students
• Residing with students in the dormitory for the duration of the program and serving as an active, responsible program leader beyond the classroom, supporting student well-being and reinforcing community expectations 
• Leading academic and social activities during evenings and select weekends

About You

• An undergraduate student in mathematics, computer science, or a related field
• Experienced with, or interested in, working with students in an academic or residential setting
• Have a strong background in mathematics, computer science, or both; it is fine to have greater depth in one subject than the other
• Comfortable with foundational programming and mathematical problem-solving, and willing to learn beyond your primary area of expertise
• A patient and encouraging communicator who enjoys helping students work through challenging material
• Exercises sound judgment, maintains clear boundaries, and handles sensitive student matters discreetly, escalating concerns when appropriate
• Having a genuine interest in strategy, logic, and mathematical games is preferred
• Available to live on site for the full program and support evening and select weekend activities
