Member of Technical Staff (Infrastructure)

We're building Percy, the AI agent that runs financial crime investigations end to end.

Compliance teams at banks and fintechs are drowning in financial crimes investigations. Transaction volumes are surging, regulators keep raising the bar, and the work still runs on manual review queues that take hours and are stitched together from legacy vendors. We believe AI will make most of these decisions within a few years, so we built Percy to handle them. Percy learns each team's procedures and makes the same calls their analysts would: clearing false positives, escalating real risk, writing the case narrative, and documenting every decision for audit. It cuts review workloads by 70%+ and routinely catches fraud that human reviewers miss.

Percy is only possible because of the identity platform we've spent four years building underneath it. Because we own the entire identity flow, Percy resolves ambiguity at the source, running its own checks across our verification tools before a case ever reaches a human.

We're backed by QED, Index, Box Group, and Lerer Hippeau, and trusted by companies like Bilt, Nuvei, and MoonPay. We 5x'd revenue last year and plan to do it again in 2026. The team is small, senior, and ships fast.

The Role

Footprint sits on the critical path of our customers' onboarding and financial-crime operations. Every time a bank or fintech runs a verification or Percy works an investigation, our systems have to be fast, correct, and always up, all while handling some of the most sensitive data on the internet. Today our backend engineers build and run that infrastructure alongside shipping product. You'd be the first person whose entire job is infrastructure.

You're inheriting a real, working system, and your job is to take it from "maintained on the side" to deliberately owned and built to scale. Agent deployment, observability, CI/CD, and task scheduling become yours to shape. You'll decide what we build versus buy, set the standards the rest of engineering relies on, and take infra off the backend team's plate so they can focus on product. Because we wear a lot of hats here, much of the work is infrastructure for our products, and you'll jump in to build product directly when that's what moves us forward.

What You'll Do

• Deploy and scale our AI-agent infrastructure. Operate the sandboxed, isolated compute that our agents run on, and make agent deployment safe, fast, and observable. This is core to how we fight financial crime.

• Own observability end to end. Define how we measure reliability, latency, and cost across our Rust services and AI agents, and make production legible so every engineer can debug fast.

• Own CI/CD. Build and harden the pipelines that take code from commit to production, and keep our per-PR ephemeral environments fast and trustworthy.

• Make shipping fast and safe. Improve the developer experience by investing in code review tooling, merge queue tooling, and a testing strategy the whole team can rely on.

• Treat developer experience as a product. Your customers are also Footprint engineers; invest in the tooling, feedback loops, and paved paths that make them faster.

• Build for the product, not just the platform. Much of this role is infrastructure in service of our products, and rolling up your sleeves to build product directly when that's what the team needs. We wear a lot of hats here.

What We're Looking For

• 4+ years of hands-on experience operating production infrastructure on a major cloud, including provisioning, deploying, and debugging real systems under load.

• Fluency with infrastructure-as-code and a track record of managing infra declaratively rather than by hand.

• Strong observability instincts: you've built the metrics, traces, logs, and alerting that let a team catch and resolve incidents quickly.

• Experience owning CI/CD pipelines and the build/deploy systems a whole engineering org depends on.

• Comfort going deep on databases (especially relational/Postgres): performance, scaling, and safe schema/operational changes.

• A bias toward leverage: you make other engineers faster, not just yourself.

• Comfort juggling many competing priorities at one time.

• Comfort operating in ambiguity at an early-stage company: you're at home taking a function that's been handled on the side and making it your own, on a small team that moves fast.

Nice to Have

• Experience with our stack: Rust, Postgres, AWS (ECS/Fargate, Aurora Postgres, CloudFront), Pulumi / Terraform, Datadog / OpenTelemetry, and GitHub Actions.

• Experience deploying or sandboxing AI-agent / LLM workloads (e.g. Modal or similar serverless compute), including isolation and security of agent execution.

• Security-minded infra experience (secrets management, network isolation, least-privilege IAM). This is a plus in a company built on detecting and stopping financial crime.

Success Looks Like

• 90 Days: You've taken ownership of a slice of our infra and fixed a real bottleneck, faster agent deploys, more trustworthy ephemeral environments, or an observability gap that now lets on-call trace a slow agent run. The team routes infra decisions to you.

• 1 Year: You lead infrastructure builds internally. Agent compute is fast, safe, and observable; we have real reliability, latency, and cost numbers; CI/CD is trusted rather than fought; and you've made a defensible build-vs-buy call on task scheduling. The backend team ships faster because you've taken infra off their plate.
