Head of Engineering, Stealth Neurology Startup
New York City (In-Person)
About Bedrock Talent
At Bedrock Talent, we're intentional about the companies we represent.
We don't partner with every startup that comes our way. We work with founders we'd be excited to work for ourselves, companies tackling meaningful problems, and teams we genuinely believe are building something special.
This is one of those companies.
About the Company
Our client is a confidential, seed-stage healthcare technology company building software to transform neurological care.
They're still operating quietly while they continue to build a competitive advantage, but they've already assembled an exceptional founding team, attracted early customer momentum, and are building with remarkable intentionality.
The mission is ambitious. The market is enormous. The opportunity to shape the future of the company is very real.
The Opportunity
We're looking for a Head of Engineering who wants to build far more than software.
This is an opportunity to define technical strategy, establish engineering culture, hire an exceptional team, and partner directly with the founders to build a company from the earliest stages.
You'll spend your time writing code, making architectural decisions, mentoring engineers, recruiting top talent, and helping determine what engineering looks like as the company scales.
If you're looking to manage a large organization from day one, this isn't that role.
If you're excited by building the organization that eventually becomes that company, keep reading.
Before You ApplyRather than bury the important details at the bottom of a job description, here's what tends to determine whether someone gets excited about this opportunity—or realizes it probably isn't the right fit.
Five Days a Week in NYC
This is an in-person company.
Not because anyone believes great work only happens in an office, but because the founders believe the earliest chapters of building a company are fundamentally collaborative.
The hardest conversations, biggest breakthroughs, and strongest relationships happen when talented people spend time solving problems together.
If that energizes you, you'll probably love it here.
You'll Build More Than a Product
Yes, you'll own technical architecture.
But you'll also help build:
the engineering culture
hiring process
technical roadmap
development practices
engineering organization
This is a rare opportunity to influence every aspect of how engineering operates from the ground up.
A Mission Worth Building
Healthcare is filled with problems that deserve better technology.
This team is focused on improving neurological care through software that helps providers operate more effectively and ultimately deliver better outcomes for patients.
If you care about building products that matter, you'll find purpose here.
Exceptional Founders
I've spent over a decade recruiting for startups and have had the privilege of working with hundreds of founders.
Every once in a while, you meet a team that simply has good bones.
They're thoughtful.
Curious.
Low ego.
Exceptionally ambitious.
They're building deliberately, care deeply about their people, and have created the kind of environment where talented individuals do the best work of their careers.
That's why Bedrock Talent chose to partner with them.
What You'll DoDefine and execute the company's engineering strategy
Lead architecture and technical decision-making across the platform
Remain deeply hands-on, contributing code where it creates the most leverage
Hire, mentor, and develop a world-class engineering team
Establish engineering processes that balance speed with quality
Partner closely with the founders on company strategy and product direction
Foster a culture of ownership, craftsmanship, and continuous learning
Help scale both the technology and the organization through the next phase of growth
TypeScript
Node.js
AWS
Modern web technologies
Has built and scaled software in fast-moving startup environments
Is equally comfortable discussing system architecture and reviewing pull requests
Loves mentoring engineers while remaining an active builder
Has experience hiring exceptional technical talent
Thrives in ambiguity and enjoys creating structure where none exists
Thinks like an owner, not an employee
Wants to build a company—not just work at one
You enjoy building organizations as much as building products.
You believe engineering culture is created through example.
You want meaningful equity and ownership over the company's technical future.
You're energized by the pace and ambiguity of seed-stage startups.
You'd rather work with ten exceptional people than manage a hundred average ones.
You're looking for a fully remote position.
You prefer managing through layers rather than staying hands-on.
You enjoy mature organizations with established processes more than creating those processes yourself.
You'd rather optimize an existing system than build one from scratch.
The best Head of Engineering opportunities don't come around very often.
The combination of exceptional founders, meaningful work, early ownership, technical challenges, and the ability to shape an entire engineering organization is incredibly rare.
If reading this made you think, "This sounds exactly like the kind of company I've been hoping to find," we'd love to have a conversation.
